My call to David Swenson had confirmed that if my theory wasn’t exactly right, it was close enough to make some decisions on how to proceed.

We were now in my territory.

I understood what was happening. The only difference was that the senator was trying to get a settlement agreement by using force.

“Our first priority is to make sure Walmsley knows we’re onto him,” I said to Winston, feeling far more confident than I had since getting into his car.

“What?”

“Yes,” I said, nodding. “Once he knows we know, he might back off because it’s gonna look terrible for him if word gets out.”

“Who’s to say he won’t just send somebody to kill us? What about Aurelia? Aren’t you afraid he might kill her?”

I studied Winston. “You said you didn’t find a mafia connection, right?”

“But that doesn’t mean one doesn’t exist.”

“He won’t harm her. Not in the middle of a trial. That’s her protection.” It was difficult to explain to Winston how I knew my instincts were correct, but I was confident I was right.

“This is all just a guess.”

“We can hit two birds with one stone.”

“How do you figure we’re going to do that?”

“Give me a second,” I said. Closing my eyes and rubbing my temples. “Okay, I’m calling Walmsley.”

“Mitch, think this through.”

“Do you have a better plan?”

“Hang on,” Winston said, pulling out his pistol and retracting the slide to make sure a round was chambered before returning it to his holster. “I’m ready.”
